Bump In The Night
Expressive Typography, Illustration
Bump In The Night is a classic horror literature collection featuring Dracula, Frankenstein, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and The Werewolves of London. The covers were redesigned to create a cohesive visual identity, uniting the stories under a shared eerie aesthetic despite their different authors andtime periods.

For this redesign, I created 15 sketches to explore different concepts and compositions for the Dracula redesign. I also experimented with expressive typography, using letterforms to enhance the eerie atmosphere and amplify the narrative tension of each cover.

Two of my concepts were particularly well received, each showcasing strong visuals and expressive typography. I combined the best elements from both, merging their compositions and narrative styles

to create a more impactful design.

The first draft of the cover, featuring a full red background with bold black typography, effectively combined the Victorian castle silhouetted against the moon with a swarm of bats from the two selected concepts. It was well received for its striking composition and eerie atmosphere. However, to truly elevate the design, some adjustments were needed to enhance contrast and depth.

The finished design deepens the red to reflect Dracula’s blood-soaked story, with a smaller castle and moon for a more haunting effect. The back cover uses black with off-white text for better legibility. This process was repeated for Frankenstein, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and The Werewolves of London to complete the collection.
